A client engaged HR Risk Mitigation to conduct a background check on a prospective hire. At first glance, everything appeared clean — exactly the kind of result most standard checks would return.
No records. No issues. Nothing to slow the process down.
Looking Closer
But one detail didn’t sit quite right.
The candidate claimed a bachelor’s degree. Verification came back as “enrolled” with no degree awarded. On its own, it was easy to dismiss with these things happen. People round up, misstate, or assume completion counts. In many cases, that’s where the review stops. HR Risk Mitigation kept going.
What Changed
Rather than relying solely on database results, the team reached out directly to the registrar. What came back changed the picture — not dramatically, but meaningfully. The candidate had, in fact, completed all academic requirements more than six years earlier. The degree simply had never been conferred.
The reason was unexpectedly minor: outstanding campus parking tickets.
Left unresolved, the credits would have eventually expired, and the degree would have been permanently lost.
That context mattered.
The information was shared with the client. The candidate moved quickly to resolve the issue, and the degree was formally conferred just before the window closed.
What could have been flagged as a discrepancy, or overlooked entirely became a recoverable issue, identified and addressed in time. Sometimes the smallest detail carries the greatest consequence.
HR Risk Mitigation looks beyond the surface — ensuring that what appears minor is fully understood before decisions are made.
